Richard Joseph “Rick” Fiala 1957 - 2026

The St. Louis baseball community mourns the passing of Rick Fiala — a coach, mentor, and true steward of the game whose impact will be felt for generations.

Rick’s baseball journey began as a standout player at Meramec Community College, where he earned All-American honors and competed in the NJCAA World Series, before continuing his career at Southern Illinois University. But it was his work as a coach that defined his legacy.

For decades, Rick dedicated himself to developing players at every level of the game. As a leader in the St. Louis Metro Collegiate Baseball League and head coach of the Bandits, he built not only competitive teams, but a culture rooted in hard work, accountability, and respect for the game. His influence reached far beyond wins and championships.

Rick helped shape the careers of numerous players who went on to professional baseball, including Major League standouts like Mark Buehrle and David Freese. To many more, he was simply “Coach” — a trusted voice, a teacher of the game, and a mentor in life.

Even after facing significant personal challenges later in life, Rick’s passion for baseball and commitment to his players never wavered. His resilience and love for the game served as an inspiration to everyone around him.

A member of the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, Rick leaves behind a legacy defined not just by accomplishments, but by the countless lives he touched.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Fiala family, his former players, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rick Fiala will be deeply missed, and forever remembered.
